RedBone’s excellent Friday night showcase was an emotional but ultimately cathartic cocktail of nostalgia, memorial, ritual and ribaldry, spanning the ages with delicate, inclusive balance. The Legends, as ever, were beacons of light and rebellion which we should all bask in as much and as long as we can.
As a specialist documenter of burlesque over the past 25 years, I was very happy to see some neo-pioneers appear tonight – alongside the truly iconic Foxy Tann returning as emcee – namely the precious treasure that is Ray Gunn, the truly ingenious Mr Gorgeous (with one of the most absurd, unhinged culinary spectacles I’ve ever ‘digested’), The Shanghai Pearl and Violet Eva (I actually jumped up from my chair with joy when I saw you two!) and the ever poetic and poised Kellita, as well as Perle Noire receiving the Sassy Lassy Award. We’re at a point where the revival generation I came up with is at risk of being lost somewhere in between the present and hallowed golden age, and I feel the loss of the Sunday night showcase, which was dedicated to them, more keenly as time goes on. Here’s hoping for more appearances next year, particularly pioneers from the nineties and noughties! They are, arguably, the legends yet to come…
