Join Jo Weldon and friends as they celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the New York School of Burlesque with all-star spectacular GodDamned Women, featuring a fantastic lineup of NYSB instructors, including burlesque heavyweights Dirty Martini, Angie Pontani and Julie Atlas Muz.
Jo Weldon, headmistress of the New York School of Burlesque and author of The Burlesque Handbook told 21st Century Burlesque Magazine:
“I’m so excited to be presenting this show! There isn’t anywhere I’d rather celebrate the tenth anniversary of the New York School of Burlesque than at Coney Island, where they’ve been fostering the Neo-Burlesque revolution for over fifteen years. I rarely produce shows other than student showcases, so it’s a thrill to be able to bring the instructors to the stage. If all the instructors had been available, I would have booked them all, and this show would be running until four in the morning!
It’s been a huge honour to be the Headmistress for ten years. I started teaching because people asked me to, and I still can’t believe everywhere this has taken me. Even though I had already been presenting workshops on my own, I started hiring the people who inspired me the most in 2004, because many of them had never taught and I knew so many students who were dying to learn from them. I’m so grateful they’ve been willing to work with me! They’ve made the school what it is.
I’m also thrilled to do a show representing rebellious women throughout history. Women have been oppressed, silenced, tortured, and killed for daring to step outside their prescribed domestic boundaries. This show is dedicated to undomesticated women all over the world!”
GodDamned Women is all about women who, throughout history, have been considered damnable nuisances and threats to society. With their fierceness, their outrageousness, and their writhing lasciviousness in your face. these are the women who’ve broken windows and opened doors in their determination to broaden their horizons. Celebrate the women who’ve had it their way!
