When we saw the announcement for this epic show, we could hardly believe our eyes, or stop squealing!
A MINDBLOWING line-up of award winning superstars – all absolute masters of their craft, and each with a unique personality and style. Every single one of them is an Exotic World / Burlesque Hall of Fame winner, and all of them made it into our Burlesque Top 50 2009 – as voted exclusively by YOU!
And who else could possibly host such an evening but the legendary Murray Hill? New York is truly blessed tonight…
We spoke to co-producer Angie Pontani about the conception of this fabulous show. Angie won the MEW crown in 2008, and will also be performing tonight…
When did the concept for this show come together – has this been in the pipeline for some time, or is it a more recent development?
Murray and I thought up the concept last summer while sharing a dressing room at our show, This is Burlesque. We spent a lot of time together and brainstormed a lot of things.
I think some of the best ideas to come out of our dressing room were ‘Spanx for men’, ‘Ginger Candy eating competitions’, ‘burlesque bikram yoga’, and this show of course!
We heard that several starlets were going to be in town this March and we pushed to secure this date as a launching point for the concept. The stars aligned and we went for it slightly ahead of our original schedule.
You must be beyond thrilled to have such a mindblowing line-up! What is it about these performers (besides your fabulous self!) that excites and impresses you personally?
Well aside from the fact that most of the cast are Miss Exotic World winners, most of us are part of the original team that can be credited with helping to pioneer the revival. It’s been a long road, so that says a lot. Additionally, I think everyone on the line up brings an exceptional amount of fabulousness, talent and power to the bill. I just wish I could sit in the audience for it.
Do you have a particular structure in mind for this show, or an aesthetic theme? Will we see our favourite, iconic acts from each of you, or can we expect something new or unique to this show?
Absolutely, as the show grows, we will develop it further. In the future, the show will feature each performers winning iconic act as well as another piece that highlights their finest skills, we might even have a group number! Can you imagine 7 – 10 Queens of Burlesque all on stage at once…? You wont have to imagine later this year! It will happen.
Can you tell us anything about your planned performance?
Not specifically, because I can not decide what to do. It will be an eleventh hour call for me, but I’ve been eating my greens, getting eight hours of sleep a night and hitting the gym every day in preparation!
Can we expect another show of this kind from you, or is this a once-in-a-lifetime spectacular that really cannot be missed? Are there future shows you have planned that you can tell us about?
Yes, absolutely. We are working on a touring version of this show, so those who can’t make it to NYC, fear not – we will come to you later in the year. It won’t be the exact same show as we are doing tonight, but it will be chock full of Queens!
We also spoke to the rest of the mindblowing line-up of stars, to hear their thoughts leading up to the show tonight…
(Miss Exotic World 2004)
“There are so many wonderful burlesque performers in the world right now sprinkling glitter and rhinestones on the planet, but some of my favorites have converged in one place on one stage and will have truckloads of fancy in tow! This show has been a dream for Murray and me for some time. We’ve been talking to Immodesty and to the Burlesque Hall of Fame to get a Miss Exotic World tour going and this is the first step and the first draft. I’m really excited that it’s happening in a place that is notorious for burlesque, where burlesque never really died – NYC!”
(Miss Exotic World 1992 and 1994)
“I am really looking forward to this show, and was happy to have been invited. It will be great to see some of my burlesque-gal-pals again, but between you and me, I am only going with the hopes that I can score some quality time alone in a dark corner with Murray Hill. He drives me wild, that silver-tounged devil!”
(Three-time Miss Exotic World Award Winner)
“It’s exciting to perform with some of my dearest friends all in one place at the Queens of Burlesque show. I’m thrilled to be part of the hottest lineup this side of the International Date Line. And, of course, the show is celebrating Immodesty Blaize’s new film ‘Burlesque Undressed’ – a fabulous addition to the growing cannon of contemporary Burlesque documentary films.”
(Miss Exotic World 2007)
“There are few things that would drag me away from the Caribbean and catching up with the Queens in New York City is one of them. I last worked with Angie and Murray together in the Big Apple seven years ago, so I am looking forward to revisiting all these years later.”
(Miss Exotic World 2005)
“I am so thrilled to be a part of this line up! I hope I get to see some of the show from the wings!”
(MEW Best Debut, New Orleans Queen of Burlesque)
“I never imagined that one dance could change my life completely. I danced at MEW and the next thing I knew the one and only Immodesty Blaize invited me to perform in her annual Tease Show. That is like winning an award in itself. Then the unthinkable happened, she told me she was going to feature me in her movie Burlesque Undressed. I still can’t believe it. Now I’m going to perform in NYC, (the place I wanted to live my entire life) with the top burlesque queens on the planet! I’m beyond grateful, humbled and completely nervous. I’m so honored to grace the stage with all of these legendary Queens. I’m floating on air. I love the stage – it is the only thing that never let me down…”
