Burlesque at London Wonderground 2014 (Part Two)

London Wonderground is set to spice up the Southbank for a third year this summer, with an extensive and varied programme of events covering cabaret, comedy, music, circus, and burlesque.  I heartily recommend multiple visits to Wonderground; you can enjoy a cool drink in the gardens with lanterns dancing above you in the trees, browse the sideshows and attractions, and then enter the gorgeous Speigeltent to experience a relaxed evening of entertainment.  Comedy fans amongst you will also enjoy the Udderbelly Festival next door.

Here is part two of my guide to all the shows which focus on or include burlesque performance at London Wonderground 2014 for your consideration.   Stay tuned throughout the summer for reviews and photos from these productions…

Enjoy some life drawing and quality cabaret entertainment at the Dr. Sketchy sessi0ns at London Wonderground, with subjects including Bettsie Bon Bon, Polly Rae, Fancy Chance and Ophelia Bitz.  Dr. Sketchy’s London organiser Clare-Marie had this to say about the event:

“Attracting audiences in over a hundred cities across the globe (including New York, London, Paris, Tokyo and Melbourne) Dr. Sketchy’s is the world’s premier alternative life drawing movement.  This summer Dr. Sketchy’s will be bringing its drunken, drawing debauchery to the London Wonderground festival for its most impressive show yet, starring the best burlesque and cabaret performers the big smoke has to offer.  No previous artistic ability required, all materials provided.”

Mondays 12th May, 23rd June, 28th July, 1st September. £15.50 – £20.50  Book Tickets.

The Double R Club

Experience the dark, disturbing dream world of the Double R Club at London Wonderground 2014.  Co-producer Rose Thorne describes the production:

“The Double R Club (‘Best Ongoing Production 2012 and 2013’), returns to London Wonderground for a second year. Following on from the success of last summer, Benjamin Louche (‘Best Host’, 2014 London Cabaret Awards) will lead a hand-picked cast of cabaret’s best to once again leave our audiences uneasy, possibly queasy, and with enough dreams to last a lifetime.

The Double R Club will make you laugh, make you cry and, who knows, perhaps even scare beyond the capacity for rational thought…”

2nd August + 23rd August.  £17.50  Book Tickets.

“Bernadette Byrne and Victor Victoria – otherwise known as the infamously risqué musical comedy duo EastEnd Cabaret – wrangle the best line-up in town for Friday Night Freaks.

Shockingly hilarious comedians, the most bizarre and beautiful burlesque beauties, and a range of other curious acts come together in a wild, late-night extravaganza on London’s Southbank.”

I spoke to Lili La Scala about this successful cabaret extravaganza which hits London Wonderground 2014 in September:

“We have the incredible Betsy Rose and the amazing Vicky Butterfly starring in these shows. The line-up also includes The Boy with Tape on His Face, Mat Ricardo, and Michael Standen, one of London’s finest hand balancers.

I think the line-up shows London’s many strengths, both burlesque and variety wise. It’s a show of which I am incredibly proud. It has glamour, it has sparkle and a huge dash of panache!”

19th + 27th September.  £15.50  Book Tickets.
